IN MEMORY OF SUE BAYLEY

Picture
Sue Bayley, An Artist and Adventurer

Sue Bayley, a painter whose vivid canvases reflected a life steeped in travel, nature, and magical thinking, passed away on November 10 in West Vancouver.

Sue was diagnosed with Stage IV lymphoma in 2018. As her disease progressed, she struggled with the added complication of myalgic encephalomyelitis, battling the illness she faced with what friends described as “ strength, courage, and good humour.”

A renaissance woman guided by curiosity, compassion, and a painter’ s eye, Sue had the soul of an artist and the spirit of a nomad. Trained first in painting and ballet in London, she later studied psychology and education at the University of London before working in advertising and the music business, where she booked and promoted rock concerts in the 1970s.

After emigrating to Canada with her then husband Richard Cudmore, she settled in the Squamish-Whistler area. Once their three boys were in school, she began working in PR for Whistler Blackcomb. She later entered the film industry as a location scout and location manager. In off hours, she returned to her easel.

Eventually, Sue’ s passion for marine conservation drew her across the Pacific. In Maui, she assisted with whale-research projects; in Fiji, she taught in island schools and contributed to water-conservation projects; next, she undertook filmmaking in the Caribbean.

Ever restless, she packed her paints into a truck and drove the backroads of Baja Mexico, teaching and painting en plein air. “ I just follow where the colour takes me,” she liked to say.

When grandchildren arrived, she returned to West Vancouver, converting her home into a studio. Her paintings were shown in galleries across Canada, Mexico, and Hawaii, and her work is held in collections internationally. In 2023, she received the Distinguished Artist Award from British Pacific Properties.

Sue was a generous supporter of medical and research causes, donating paintings to fundraisers for the Lions Gate and Vancouver General Hospital Foundations, BC Cancer, Cops for Cancer, and ME/CFS research.

She is survived by her sons Jamie Cudmore (Jennifer), Daniel Cudmore (Stephanie), and Luke Cudmore (Shannon); granddaughters Maelle, Indianna, Eleanor, and Addison; and grandsons Grayson and Jameson.

The family expressed gratitude to Dr. Diego Villa from BC Cancer Centre, Dr. Paul Sugar, and the Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation for their care. Donations may be made in her memory to the Foundation.
