In memory of Blake Delgaty

DELGATY, Blake
November 3, 1952 – March 8, 2018
We are saddened to announce the passing of a wonderful family man: a true gentle spirit, a leader and mentor, a hiker, a canoeist and a wilderness adventurer.
Lovingly remembered by Lauren, his beloved wife, friend and confident for over thirty- seven years; his son Michael whom he adored, encouraged and supported; sister Patricia Delgaty, brother-in-law Bill Cook; cherished mother-in-law Joan Klips and late father-in-law Jack Klips; treasured in-laws, Barbara and Cameron McLeod, Keith Klips, Gary and Darlene Klips, Leslie and Larry Wishlow, Jacqueline and Michael Hryciuk; his adored nieces and nephews Jessica and Scott Nelson, Julia Bassili, the late Cameron McLeod Jr, Michelle Klips, Gordon Delgaty-Cook, Steven Klips, Christine Friske, Morgan McLeod, Alexander Wishlow, Sidney Hryciuk, Lucas Hryciuk; precious grandnephews Scott Jr and Jared Nelson; extended family Elaine and Dan Trochim, Carole, Chad and Emily McMillan, Lisa Trochim, Doreen Elwin, Edie and Hans Jud, Chris Elwin, uncles Tom Delgaty, Ralph Delgaty and Delgaty cousins; family friend Jennifer Chan. Blake will truly be missed by his lifelong friends Glenda and Peter Friske.
Born to parents Gordon and Helen Delgaty and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Blake was educated in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and graduated from Lakehead University with a Bachelor of Science. Blake joined the public service in Pigeon and Rainy River, Ontario in the late 70's as a Customs Inspector. He embarked on a long and distinguished career where he held a wide variety of management positions within the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). His career culminated as Regional Director General from 1994 until his retirement in December 2012. Blake was valued within the organization for his strong leadership, innovation and forward thinking. He was the recipient of the Customs and Excise Award of Excellence and The Federal Treasury Board Award of Excellence for his work in developing the PACE (CANPASS) Program in British Columbia. Blake served as a mentor and role model for many.
Blake's spirit was driven by his passion for the outdoors, his love of music and a fine red wine. He lived for his next adventure: his next canoe, hiking, camping or golf trip. He was at his best exploring Yoho National Park, Banff, Mt. Robson, Stikine River, Clearwater, Murtle, and Bowron Lakes. He loved planning extensively by enthusiastically reviewing maps, forest roads and mountain trails. His love of Birkenhead was shared with all. His quiet passions for music, reading, all sports, politics and world events together with his keen intellect and witty humour, fueled his many conversations with family, friends and colleagues.
Blake's family was an integral part of his being. He loved his adventures with his family and friends to Mexico, Florida, Vegas and especially our beloved rental home in Eagle Ridge Fountain Hills, Arizona.
The family wishes to thank the exceptional care from caregiver Shammay (Home Care Assistance), caregivers from Vancouver Coastal Health and West Vancouver First Responders. A special thank you to Dr. Paul Sugar for his compassion and family-centred care.
Lauren and Michael invite family, friends and colleagues to a Celebration of Blake's Life on Thursday, March 15, 2018, 2 p.m., at Gleneagles Golf Club, 6190 Marine Drive, West Vancouver.
Memorial donations in memory of Blake may be made to the Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation.
