November 18, 1952 - March 8, 2014
It is with profound sadness that the Tan family announces the passing of our daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, & aunt, Doris, on March 8th, 2014 at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, BC.
Doris worked to fight her illness over the past months the same way she had worked to build and grow her company, International Beauty Services, with fierce and relentless determination.
She was a private and independent person, who did not wish to burden her friends and associates with the details of her illness. The family honoured this wish, and trusts that others who cared and continue to care about her would do the same.
Doris leaves behind her mother, Lana; daughter, Sabrina (Jeff) and granddaughter, Jada; sister, Grace (Hart); sister, Sandra (Keith) and niece, Lauren (Paul). She was pre-deceased by her father, George, in 1983.
Born in Hong Kong, Doris emigrated to Canada with her parents and sisters in 1967. As all who knew her story would agree, Doris was the very definition of a self-made woman, with humble beginnings in business. She was the president and sole owner of International Beauty Services until the time of her death. Her many phenomenal achievements include the Rotman Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Lifetime Achievement category, presented by the Business Development Bank of Canada in 2003. In 1993, she graduated from the Harvard University Grad School of Business Administration Owner/ President Management Program (Class 20).
As much as she was devoted to her business, Doris made time to entertain friends and family, and opened up her house to many at her beloved vineyard in Okanagan Falls. She loved and knew all about good food and great wines. Doris believed in believing in one's self and in dreaming big. But she never forgot her early struggles as a single mother, and generously supported women in similar circumstances whenever and however she could.
The family would like to extend special gratitude to Dr. Paul Sugar for his invaluable help and wisdom in the late days and weeks of our journey with Doris.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation or to the Edmonton Women's Shelter (WIN House).
Cremation will take place as per Doris' request. Details of a memorial service in celebration of Doris's life will follow.
