Mrs. Marie Chew Moon Chan
January 20, 1940 - June 13, 2017
Marie Chew Moon Chan (nee Chu), passed away peacefully on June 13, 2017, with her family by her side.
Born in Vancouver on January 20, 1940, she was the 2nd youngest of 13 siblings. She grew up in the Chinatown area of Vancouver, and graduated from Vancouver Technical Secondary School. She attended the University of British Columbia, obtaining her education degree, subsequently teaching in both Burnaby and Vancouver, focusing on the subjects of home economics and business education.
She was married to Gerald for 54 years, mom to Bruce (Diana) and Andrea, and grandmother to Branden.
Marie will be remembered for her devotion to her family, as well as her fun loving spirit and smile. She was very proud of the fact that she and Gerald were able to put themselves through university, and provide for a good home for their family.
Having grown-up in a very large, immigrant family, she wanted to give her children what she and Gerald didn't have the privilege of as children. There were weekly Friday night chinese dinners out including luxurious crab, annual family vacations including cruises before cruising gained mass popularity, and year-round activities including swimming lessons, skiing, adventure camps, and racquet sports. However, there was always an emphasis on discipline, education and the need to always be able to provide for yourself regardless of choice of career. This same attitude continued with her grandson Branden, although he was spoiled a little bit more.
After retirement, Marie enjoyed gardening, shopping (including a phase of extreme garage sale shopping), bridge and cooking for the family. But most of all, she enjoyed being "Po Po" to Branden. Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt and teacher, Marie was 77 years old, and will be greatly missed by many.
The family will be establishing a scholarship at Vancouver Technical Secondary School, where she both graduated from and taught at, for the most outstanding graduating vocational student, to be used towards post-secondary trade/vocational school education.
Special thanks go out to the absolutely wonderful care of Dr. Sugar, the nurses and all of the staff at both "7 West" at Lions Gate Hospital and the North Shore Hospice. Truly dedicated people who make the end-of-life experience for the patient and their families as positive and loving experience as can be.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 23, commencing at 3:30pm, at the West Vancouver Yacht Club. 5854 Marine Drive, West Vancouver.
In lieu of gifts and flowers, it was her wish that donations be made to the Dr. Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation
