In memory of Melita Diane Martell
Melita Diane Martell (nee Matthes)
June 05, 1940 - April 02, 2017
Lonsdale, meet your newest Angel - Melita Martell. On April 2nd, our Mom passed away with Jon holding one hand and Roberta, the other.
Family and friends gathered to shepherd Mom out of her surly bonds with music, beer, laughter and tears.
Many of you knew Mel as a spirited, talented and gregarious stylist.
Her lifelong passion for doing hair was just one of her many ways of bringing out the best in people. A long time single-mom who ran her own businesses, she nevertheless found time to coach our softball teams, take us hither and yon for tournaments and attend all our events. She had a strong sense of how things ought to be, so she made time to get involved in everything around her, serving on the executive of Bert Duke girls' softball league and on her strata council.
Mom's words to live by were to aspire to inspire before you expire... and man did she ever!
Chuck Norris only wishes he could be Melita Martell fighting cancer! From lung cancer to lobectomy to chemo to brain cancer to craniotomy to whole brain radiation to lung cancer and more radiation, Mom kicked ass and took names for two solid years; always with grace, humour, style and not a trace of self-pity.
Mel will be watching over the Martell Cartel; her kids, Lauree, Roberta and Jon and Mom's kinder garten of giblets; Avery, Caitlyn, Paige, Matthew, Piper, Ayla, Ever and Kitson. Mel is predeceased by her Mom and Dad, Gus and Frieda Matthes, and by her brother Jimmy. She is survived by her brothers Terry (Barb) Matthes, Leslie (Marina) Matthes, her honourary daughter Barb Faulkner and her cousin Connie Carter.
Mom, you were the best. We'll miss you always and forever. We know you didn't want a service, but folks are a'clamourin', so please join us Sunday May 7th at Jack Lonsdales Pub between 2 and 4 pm to hoist a pint and reminisce about Mel.
If you'd like to honour Mom, please donate to help clone Dr. Paul Sugar - or at least to support his amazing work paulsugarfoundation.com
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
Way above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.
