Mindfulness Program
MINDFULNESS BASED STRESS REDUCTION PROGRAM (for adults)
The Camp Kerry Society is pleased to announce the launch of our new Mindfulness Program, which is supported and funded by the Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation.
Mindfulness is “paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, without judging.” Often we can be lost in our thoughts or distractions and miss out on what really matters in our lives.
The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program, developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine, is an 8-week program which offers guided mindfulness meditation practices including: the Body Scan Meditation, Sitting Meditation with mindfulness of breath, body sensations, emotional energy and thought, mindful movement, gentle hatha yoga practiced with Mindful awareness of the body and walking meditation. Information is provided about stress reactivity, and resilience. Home practice is required and optimizes the benefits! Course materials will be provided.
This course is taught by Camp Kerry Team member Anne Walker. Anne has worked in the health care field as a social worker for over 20 years. She has taught MBSR to patients at the Burnaby Hospital Cancer Centre and to staff, volunteers and clients of the Delta Hospice Society while working as a member of the Hospice Palliative Care Consult Team. She has witnessed and personally experienced relief of suffering and improved quality of life through Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and she is passionate about teaching it! Creating safety, building resilience and holding possibility are important to her as well as compassion, laughter and mutual adventure in learning.
Sessions for the fall season will commence on October 20 and be held on Tuesdays from 10 AM – 12:30 PM for 8 consecutive weeks with a full day program on Saturday, November 28. This program is currently being offered at the Palliative Support Centre, which is located at 3743 Delbrook Avenue, North Vancouver.
An information session will be held on Thursday 15 October at 1:30pm at the Palliative Support Centre (3743 Delbrook Ave, North Vancouver)
